Combining biodiversity, recreational use, profitability of production and controlling nutrient loading from agriculture is not an easy task. New kind of thinking is required, keeping what is good about the old but also searching for new ways to do things.

Four ways to achieve the goals are presented here:

    1) agri-environmental support
    2) advisory services
    3) the old (measures already in use)
    4) the new (measures used in other countries or being developed)

In addition to these four, more exchange of information is needed between farmers and researches. Information needs to reach decision makers, so that the current situation can be changed for the better. Improvement of agri-environmental matters requires interdisciplinary cooperation.

Changes in attitudes are  needed in all the groups involved so that resources can be directed to improving the situation, not finding someone to blame or to pursuit of self-interest.

Promoting the additional benefits of agri-environmental measures (such as recreational use) can help to change attitudes as well.
